Rayt "रेत " | Sanskrit | Hindi. The word for sand.
It seemed fitting.
Glass begins as sand. Add a little fire, a little colour and a lot of patience, and and something ordinary becomes something that lasts for years.. Every Rayt box carries a line from A Psalm of Life: - "...leave behind us footprints on the sands of time."
Because that's what we HOPE our pieces become.
Not objects that sit perfectly on a shelf, but familiar ones that quietly become part of everyday life.
The glass everyone reaches for. The bowl that has seen every celebration. The vase that always seems to find fresh flowers.
Small things.
But sometimes, those are the things that stay with us the longest.
That's the रेत of it.
The little moments that quietly shape a life.
So how did Rayt come to be?
Everyone expects a grand origin story. Instead, it's just... dinner. In hindsight, this was probably inevitable.
It all started with a set of coloured wine glasses I bought in 2012 and I still have them. They've survived birthdays, heartbreaks, girls' nights, Sunday lunches, house moves and far too many "just one drink" evenings that absolutely weren't.
When I finally decided it was time for another set, I couldn't find anything that felt the same. Everything was either too serious, too safe, served one purpose or looked like it belonged in a cabinet waiting for guests.
So, in 2024, Mahima and I started Rayt.
We didn't want perfect glassware. We wanted objects that would last us a lifetime and one we would happily use on a weekday too. The kind that quietly becomes part of our life and i can pass them down.
That's still the idea behind everything we make. Right now its glasses. One day there will be more.
